Jupiter making closest approach in nearly 50 years

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest planet within the Solar System.[13] It is a gas giant with a mass slightly less than one-thousandth of the Sun but is two and a half times the mass of all the other planets in our Solar System combined. Jupiter is classified as a gas giant along with Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Together, these four planets are sometimes referred to as the Jovian planets. The planet was known by astronomers of ancient times and was associated with the mythology and religious beliefs of many cultures. The Romans named the planet after the Roman god Jupiter.[14] When viewed from Earth, Jupiter can reach an apparent magnitude of −2.94, making it on average the third-brightest object in the night sky after the Moon and Venus. (Mars can briefly match Jupiter's brightness at certain points in its orbit.)Jupiter is primarily composed of hydrogen with a quarter of its mass being helium; it may also have a rocky core of heavier elements. Because of its rapid rotation, Jupiter's shape is that of an oblate spheroid (it possesses a slight but noticeable bulge around the equator). The outer atmosphere is visibly segregated into several bands at different latitudes, resulting in turbulence and storms along their interacting boundaries. A prominent result is the Great Red Spot, a giant storm that is known to have existed since at least the 17th century when it was first seen by telescope. Surrounding the planet is a faint planetary ring system and a powerful magnetosphere. There are also at least 63 moons, including the four large moons called the Galilean moons that were first discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. Ganymede, the largest of these moons, has a diameter greater than that of the planet Mercury.

Universe could be football-shaped

The Universe could be shaped like a soccer ball, say mathematicians. The idea is prompted by data from NASA's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite. This sees back to when the Universe was about 380,000 years old, and reveals the all-pervading radiation left over from the Big Bang - the cosmic microwave background. There are fluctuations in this background, like waves in the sea. They are the legacy of the small lumps in the early Universe that gave rise to stars and galaxies. An infinite Universe would contain waves of all sizes. The WMAP did not see any very large waves. This points to space being finite - for the same reasons that you don't see breakers in your bathtub. This article also contains a video by Carl Sagan who talks about the geometry of the universe as well as two other links to articles explaining this article in more detail and offering an alternate theory about the shape of the universe.

Glaciers are melting and sea levels are rising. Forests are drying up and animals are scrambling for food. The earth is heating up. A rise in temperature of 2 degrees will mean the complete imbalance of life as we know it since Earth has given our existence a home. The earth is an organism. It inhales and exhales life. It heats up and cools down when it needs to without asking human beings if it is okay to do so. There is a schedule, a pattern, a routine that is followed and has been followed for millions of years. We are part of this changing course. How then, do we effect Earth's balance? How fragile is its connection with us and our connection with it?This article also contains a video documentary that shows the affects of global warming all over the world in a very provocative and beautiful manner. Furthermore it also offers some interesting solutions for the near future to come.
