  • Afghan Elections: A new briefing paper from AREU analyses voter patterns and attitudes from three areas of Kabul Province, finding some positive signs amidst the general disarray of Afghanistan’s 2009 electoral process.


  •  Despite all of the attention being paid to Afghanistan’s controversial elections, one important question has gone largely unasked: What do Afghans think about democracy? This question is deeply relevant to Afghanistan’s future, and is at the heart of the new AREU report, Toward an Afghan Democracy? Exploring Perceptions of Democratisation in Afghanistan. 


  • Experiences of Young Afghans Returning “Home” From Pakistan and Iran is a recently released synthesis paper on the topic of second-generation Afghans, highlighting the importance of psychological and social issues associated with such homecoming.


  • Also recently released is a synthesis paper on microcredit in Afghanistan titled From Access to Impact: Microcredit and Rural Livelihoods in Afghanistan. Soon to come is a briefing paper with policy recommendations, including the need to recognize the existence and varied roles of widespread informal credit systems.


  • AREU conducted a “Confronting Child Labour in Afghanistan” workshop on 21 July 2009 at the Safi Landmark Hotel in Kabul, bringing together government and NGOs working on issues related to child labour, education and child protection. The workshop drew on the findings of AREU’s child labour study (Briefing Paper, Synthesis Paper). The proceedings of the workshop are available here.


  • The Water, Opium and Livestock research study has concluded with the release of the final synthesis paper.


  • The English, Dari and Pashto versions of the 2009 A to Z Guide to Afghanistan Assistance are available online. Dari and Pashto hardcopies available for free from the AREU Kabul office. The guide contains comprehensive Afghanistan assistance-sector information, maps, guides to the Afghan government, and country-wide contact information.


  •
